How To Zip (compress) a File On Mac

If there are many old documents and files stored on your computer, compress it into an archive to store storage space. Mac OS Allows you to compress files directly from the system. Alternatively, you can also download third-party software, which is more effective for this purpose. Follow the guidelines below to compress all your files.

1. Using Finder

Open Finder. You can open the Finder by clicking on the Finder icon in the Dock. It looks like a square blue face. Once the Finder is open, navigate to the file you want to compress.

To compress files from multiple locations in one .zip file easily, create a new directory first. Copy all the files you want to compress into this directory.

Select a file. You can select each file from a list by holding the Command key and clicking on the file. After all the files are selected, right-click one of them. If your mouse has only one button, hold Ctrl and click the file.
To compress a directory containing multiple files, right-click the directory.

Compress files. Select Compress from the right-click menu. Wait for the process to finish. Depending on the number of files you want to compress, this can take several minutes. The filename will be the same as the file or directory you choose to compress.

  • Compressing multiple files or directories will create a new file called Archive.zip.
  • The size of the compressed file will be about 10% smaller than the original. This varies, depending on the type of file being compressed.

2. Using Third Party Programs

Search for a compression program. There are many choices of compression programs on the internet, whether free or paid. Some compression formats such as .rar require exclusive software to create archives. Other compression formats such as .zip can be created with almost any compression program.
An exclusive compression way can compress files smaller than the standard .zip compression provided by Mac OS X.

Add a file. After installing and opening the compression program, add the files and directories you want to compress. How to compress it varies on every program, but it is usually done by simply dragging and dropping the file into the compression window.

Secure the file. Many compression formats allow you to add passwords to compressed files. Check the Security section, or click the File menu and select Add Password or Encrypt.
